Alison House Disney Day – A Community Success Story!

18 November 2015

The children & young people of Alison House Youth & Play Project in Cwmparc had been looking forward to their dream trip to Disneyland Paris for over 18 months but just hours before they were due to leave they heard the horrifying news of the devastating attacks in Paris. The older children and adults watched as the chaos unfolded and the decision was made to abandon the trip, even though they were told that they would lose their money.  Bev Williams, the trip coordinator said “As you can imagine all of the children and young people were extremely disappointed; but they do feel that we had a lucky escape and they’re thankful that we didn’t go a day earlier. Although some of them are really too young to comprehend the magnitude of what has happened, they did understand that it was not safe for us to go – although one little one still thinks the bus broke down! “

To try and make it up to the children  the Alison House staff and parents got together and organised a ‘Disney comes to Alison House’ day.

“We put up a post on Facebook and the response from the local community was wonderful. We had the whole day planned in a matter of hours. The theme was Disney & onesies and everyone came dressed up. We were overwhelmed with peoples’ kindness. One local resident donated £50 towards our day; Mr. Taylor from Parc Primary donated lots of crisps and snacks. Mathew Langley’s Mickey & Minnie Mouse spent the day and danced with the children and Lanleigh Payne’s Cartoon Mascots, Anna & Elsa made all the little ones dreams come true. We had lots of fun and games including a Disney colouring competition, glitter tattoos and even a few games of Bingo. To complete the Disney Day we all had a sleepover. Everyone pulled together to make it a day to remember, even the older children who were also a big help on the day said that they won’t forget it in a hurry! It is at times like this that we realise the community spirit is still alive in our little village.”

Edwards Coaches have given the group a full refund and the group is planning another trip to Disneyland Paris with the company in December 2016.

Bev Williams says:

I must add that the Edward’s Coaches rep Matt Perkins was absolutely fabulous with us throughout the whole booking process and right up to the day before departure – he must have had a hundred emails and phone calls from me to change names and rearranging rooms etc. And he has been a great help in arranging for the quick refund. Thanks Matt boy xx
